I park at the CVS, sitting in my car until Jude pulls in a few minutes later. Hopping out, I make a mad dash for the passenger side of his truck since it’s raining cats and dogs. In the distance thunder booms.

I can’t help the smile that comes over me at the sound. Jude shakes his head, amused.

“You know, for someone who’s such a ball of sunshine it really surprises me that you like storms so much.”

I strap the seatbelt across my body. “They make me feel alive.”

I reach for the AUX cord, plugging my phone in. By now, there’s no point in asking for permission. Kicking my shoes off, I rest my bare toes on the console.

He eyes my feet with narrowed eyes but doesn’t ask me to put them down.

“Do you like the color?” I wiggle my toes, watching the color shift from pink to purple. “They’re holographic.”

“Holo-what?”

“Holographic. It’s different than iridescent.”

“You know what, never mind,” he grumbles, turning out of the pharmacy parking lot.

I skip through my playlist, settling on ‘Single’ from The Neighborhood. They’re one of my favorite bands.

“You just want me to drive around again? No destination?”

“Yep.” I nod excitedly. “It makes it more fun that way.”

“Don’t you ever worry about getting lost, Little Madison?”

I shake my head, my hair swishing around my breasts. It’s gotten pretty long and I’m due for a trim, but I haven’t bothered to get one. “Nope, that’s what GPS is for.”

“And if you don’t have service?”

“Then I’d drive around until I found it.” He shakes his head, blowing out a breath from between his lips. “Keep ‘em coming. I can do this all day.”

“I’m sure you can.”

Setting my feet down on the floor, I grab my purse and dig through it until I find my bag of snacks. “Want one?” I hold up a lollipop.

He takes his eyes off the road to glare at the stick of candy in my hand like it’s personally offended him somehow. “Why do you have that?”

“Because I do.” I hold up my snack bag. “I also have Twizzlers, some Milk Duds, sour gummy worms and—”

“Are we going to the movies?”

“No,” I frown, setting the bag back on the floor, “this is standard road trip food. Don’t you know anything, Jude?”

“Apparently not.”

“I have to start the song over now. You disrupted the flow with your lollipop hate.”

He grunts in response. “Give me one then.” I gladly pass him a watermelon flavored one. “Ew, not that one.”

“Jesus, so picky. What flavor do you want then?”

“Cherry.”

“Excellent choice. I’ll forgive you for your pickiness.” I pass him a cherry-flavored one and grab one for myself.

He tries to hide his smirk, but I know no matter what he says or tries to portray, he likes me. I mean, he wouldn’t have shown up at the ballet studio saying what he did if that weren’t the case.

Sticking the lollipop in his mouth, he turns the volume up to help drown out the swish-swish-swish of the wipers.

A few songs play while I let my thoughts wander, but I find it impossible to stay quiet for too long.
